Ariyappedatha Jeevithangal

Screening of    "Ariyappedatha Jeevithangal"

The Goethe-Zentrum Trivandrum is glad to inform that the first screening of Ariyappedatha Jeevithangal, a touching documentary on a controversy that had shaken countries during the 60s and 70s. This documentary will be screened at the Goethe-Zentrum on Thursday, the 31st of May at 6.30 pm.

Noted writer Paul Zacharia will formally present the film to the audience. Veteran writer and journalist Jose Punnamparambil, documentary filmmaker Raju E Raphael and media activist and researcher K Rajagopal joined hands about a year ago to study and document the controversy that raised several questions during that period.

The Background

There were mass recruitments of young Malayali Catholic girls, who had completed matriculation or studying in senior secondary classes, to West Germany in the Sixties and Seventies. The recruitments were intended to fill up the vacancies of nuns in several German convents. There was severe shortage of nuns in the German convents due to the lack of “vocation” in the German society. The recruitment of Kerala Catholic girls to West Germany was started in 1962 and the mass migration of girls took off when the first batch of girls started their ship journey to Europe from Bombay in January 1963. Following this, many more groups of Kerala Catholic girls migrated to West Germany in the coming years and by 1972 the figure crossed 800.

The controversy

It was in 1972 that some European and American newspapers broke the controversy, terming the migration of Kerala Catholic girls as “human trafficking”. The allegation was that these girls were used as “slaves” in German convents and hospitals and they were forced to work as cleaners and labourers. Certain newspaper reports also alleged that some of these Kerala were even forced to prostitution. The reports shocked the country when Indian National and Regional Media carried the news given by their European and American counterparts.

This was a jolt to both India and Germany. The image of the Syro Malabar Church in Kerala and the Catholic Church in Germany was tarnished. Since Bishops of these two churches were behind the recruitment and migration of the Kerala girls. Their initiative was in fact based on the decisions of the Second Vatican Council of the Roman Catholic Church held in 1962. It was the second Vatican Council, which emphasized the universality of the Catholic Church and advocated the necessity to help the weaker sections of the church in different parts of the world by the stronger ones. Fr. Werner Chakkalakkal of CMI congregation was one of the priests in India, who was entrusted with the recruitment of aspirants in Kerala while Sister Ludgardis of the congregation of John the Baptist based in Leutesdorf was one of the coordinators in Germany for the recruitment and migration of Kerala girls to Germany.

The documentary makers travelled extensively in Germany, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra to chase and document the German Malayali nuns, since some of them are presently leading their retired life in these states. “The screening of the film will be an eye opener to both German and Kerala Societies on Malayali German nuns” said K. Rajagopal, who led the filming part in India

The documentary film “Ariyappedatha Jeevithangal” shot in bilingual (German and Malayalam), is written and directed jointly by Raju E Raphael and K Rajagopal, while Jose Punnamparambil carried out the research for the project. Prakash Rana does camera and editing, while Sathyajith scored the background music. Cine Director K B Venu’s commentary is another attraction of the documentary. The film was produced by Dinesh Kallarackal under the banner of Raphael and Menon Media, India.

A Little Calm Before The Storm

23 March | Goethe-Zentrum Amphitheatre, Trivandrum | 7PM

25 March |  Children's Park Theatre, Marine Drive, Kochi | 7PM

Have you ever wondered what Hitler was like as a person? What his morning routine was like, what his favourite food was, what he liked to do on lazy Sunday afternoons- did he have lazy Sunday afternoons?

A Little Calm Before the Storm is a comic play about three actors who delve so deeply into the minds of the characters they play that they forget to see them for who they really are- ensuing in an argument of absurd proportions. Don’t miss this chance to get into the mind of the enemy and take a roller coaster ride across generations and roles, packed in with a generous sack of wicked humour.

Three Actors. Two Generations. One Table. And a discussion that follows about portraying evil. Two have played Hitler on film, while the third has been Goebbels.

Absurdly funny and quite dark at the same time, the play discusses life in the theatre and outside. In 'A Little Calm Before The Storm', a clash between cultures and egos emerges between the old and the new making it a compelling watch.

Playwright: Theresia Walser

Director: Vandana Prabhu

Cast: Kanchan Bhattacharyya, Roy Sinai, Kinjal Majumdar

Stage Manager: Nuhar Bansal

She trained in drama through school, watched and acted in plays regularly. When she arrived in Bangalore in 2010, after a stint in the US, she embraced the city through its theatre, learning the ropes in a new city through readings, auditions and performances. Königin von Niendorf (2017)

(Queen of Niendorf)

Director: Joya Thome| 67 min |Colour| Family

The summer holidays have just begun in Brandenburg, but 10-year-old Lea isn’t going to camp this year with her friends as she normally would. Lately she’s been finding the other girls in her school increasingly strange anyway. So Lea ends up riding her bike through the village all by herself and visiting Mark, an old musician, who lives on a run-down farm. One afternoon, as Lea rambles through the village, she spots five boys lifting a large blue oil barrel over the fence of a paint factory and then driving away with their loot on a bicycle trailer. Lea’s curiosity is piqued. In her feature film debut, Joya Thome brings her story to life with a modest budget and by working with first-time young actors. In her director’s statement, she says, “Queen of Niendorf is not only the story of a brave girl trying to find her place in life but also an attempt to express a vague longing for simplicity and carefreeness that I feel is characteristic of our generation.”

This is C.A.R

A quest for musical spirituality in the twentytens. Four young musicians transform their musical faith into C.A.R. With flaming empathy they develop a trip-like melange of jazz and electronics, improvisation and experiment, science fiction and film noir, krautrock and cyberpunk. Gleaming energy, kaleidoscopic thoughtfulness, subtle finesse and an undeniable love for the beat — capitalization of an intoxicating mix: C.A.R.

This is C.A.R.

C.A.R. was founded in 2011 by Johannes Klingebiel and Kenn Hartwig in Cologne, Germany. Originally a quintet playing wild experimental jazz music with a pop approach, they eventually kicked the guitar and found their strength to be a subtly flowing melange of kraut-like arrangements infused with electronic and jazz sounds. Featuring drums, double bass, a wurlitzer stage piano, korg and oberheim synthesizers as well as an alto saxophone heavily altered by electronic effect devices, their tunes leave a lot of space for improvisation, but not in classical jazz way with one soloist dominating the music, but always as a delicate web of sound which has a potential to take their audience on an enticing trip.

  1.   Leonhard Huhn – saxophone, effects
  2. Christian Lorenzen - Wurlitzer Stage Piano, analog synthesizer
  3. Kenn Hartwig – double bass, effects
  4. Johannes Klingebiel – drumset

VERFEHLUNG Film Screening

Dear Friends,

Below are the details of film screening for the month of December.

(The Culpable)

Director: Gerd Schneider| 95min | Drama

Approaching its timely subject matter from a fresh perspective, director/screenwriter Gerd Schneider's new drama concerns the life and faith of catholic prison minister Jakob Voelz is fundamentally troubled when his best friend and hierarchical colleague Dominik Bertram is taken in custody under suspicion of sexually molesting young boys. Jakob would be more than happy to believe Dominik is innocent. Yet, what Jakob is beginning to suspect becomes a crucial test for his faith and his self-conception as a priest: There is a truth we welcome and there is a truth we fear, about which we tend to fall silent. Jakob begins to turn against that silence within the church, in order to discover the truth.

Featuring a superb performance by Sebastian Blomberg in the central role, The Culpable, which won the Audience Choice Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival and was recently showcased at NYC's Kino! 2016 festival of new German films, well deserves greater stateside exposure.

Tribute to Günter Grass

Günter Grass wrote dramas, poems, and especially fiction, the list of his works is very long, among them "Cat and Mouse" and "Dog Years," which, together with “The Tin Drum” were part of his famous "Gdansk Trilogy;" "Local Anesthetic," "The Flounder," "The Rat," "The Call of the Toad," and "Crabwalk." Most of his works dealt with political conditions and social upheaval, like the sinking of a refugee ship in the Baltic Sea in 1945, the role of intellectuals in the uprising in former East Germany in 1953, the student protests of 1968, federal election campaigns and political relations between the East and West. No other German writer was as controversial as Günter Grass. Despite the powerful literary pieces he produced and the Nobel Prize that he won, he had to face scathing criticism for his alleged association with National Socialism.

We, the entire team at Goethe-Zentrum Trivandrum pay our respectful homage to a great writer and thinker who passed away on 13th of April in Lübeck.

However, he decided to resume it in 2010 and submitted his thesis in May 2012. The number of children opting for German is increasing regularly and this prompted the Goethe-Institut to organize Youth Camps at various locations in India. The KV pupils from Kerala were taken in three luxury buses to the plantation resort Carmelia Haven in Vandanmedu, near Thekkady for a three-day camp, during which they learned German in a natural environment. The numerous activities offered by the Goethe-Zentrum team led by Ms. Sudha Pradeep took the participants to an exciting world of German. Pictures speak more than 1000 words… So, please have a look at these photographs from the camp.

Germany's first match against Portugal saw hundreds of football lovers flocking to the Goethe-Zentrum even during the late night hours to witness the crushing defeat Portugal had to accept. Here are some photos from that football screening….

Seminar on Higher Studies and Research

The German Academic Exchange Service (known as DAAD), an autonomous body working under the auspices of the Federal German government, organized a seminar at the Goethe-Zentrum on the possibilities of doing higher studies and research in Germany. From around the world, some 3 lakhs students are currently studying or doing research in Germany. After the United States of America, Germany is now ranked as the most-preferred destination by Indian students and research fellows. The seminar was conducted by Shilpa Pandeswhar, Information Officer of DAAD from Bangalore. In her presentation, she explained in details the educational system existing at the German universities, with particular thrust on the highly respected Technical Universities in the nine major cities. The German universities do not take any fees for the courses, except for the two federal states where the students have to pay a semester fee of 500 Euros, approximately 35,000 Rupees. With the introduction of the BLUE CARD, Germany now permits the non-EU students to seek employment in Germany and settle down there. After completing the studies or research, they are now allowed to stay in Germany for eighteen months to search and find a suitable job. This has increased the interest on Germany as a preferred destination to study and work, said Ms. Pandeshwar.

The seminar was attended by more than 150 students from different colleges and other educational institutions in the city.

Theatre Workshop at Vithura

An unusual weekend in an unusual setting. For the 29 children learning German at the Zentrum, it was a completely unusual experience with their counterparts in Vithura, which is hardly 40 km away from Trivandrum; still, completely different in specific means. Organized by the local "Suhruth Nataka Kalari" (Friends Theatre Group), the two-day drama workshop in natural settings near a canal surrounded by lush greenery, presented to the city-kids a wealth of unknown talents hidden in their minds and bodies. Braving the hot days on that weekend, the children enjoyed the camp to the fullest and jointly presented a small piece of drama strung together from whatever they had learned over the two days from the camp director Shri. Sudhakaran. The objective of the Goethe-Zentrum through such activities is to remove the gaps between the city-based and village-based children, bring them together and assist them to work as a team to nurture their artistic talents to produce a completely different theatrical experience. The children from Vithura will soon be invited to visit the Zentrum and continue the practice sessions with our children. The goal is to set-up a combined theatre group, which would later work with a children's group from Germany.
